A trip to the Dalmatian hinterland

In summer, the Dalmatian coast can be pretty busy, and if you want to avoid that, a trip to the Dalmatian hinterland is highly recommended. It is a place where you can completely unwind and enjoy the beautiful nature. No sea but the Dinara and other mountains, rolling landscapes, rivers, lakes and ancient ruins.

Below are 4 locations near each other and guarantee a memorable day. All sites are free to visit.

1) The fortress of Vrlika: Prozor

The first mentions of this fortress date back to 1406. It was damaged in an attack by the Turks in 1715. Around 1988, reconstruction of Prozor finally began but was interrupted by the war in 1991. You can access the location via a narrow, steep road, admire the ruins freely. From Prozor you have a magnificent view of Lake Peruća, Vrlika, the Dinara and….

2) Crkva Sv. Spasa, Cetina

The Church of Holy Salvation is one of the most important pre-Romanesque churches from the 9th century in Croatia that is well preserved. It is located in the village of Cetina, near the river’s source, about 8 km from Vrlika. The church still stands in its original form and is impressive in its stunning landscape. Around the church are several old and new graves.

3) The source of the Cetina

Of course, this location is an absolute must! The source is also called the eye and is beautifully visible from the wooden platform. The spring is no less than 150 metres deep, and the water is barely 5° even in summer. From the source, the Cetina flows to the Adriatic Sea in Omiš.

4) Lake Peruća

This second-largest artificial lake in Croatia is located near the Bosnian border. It is about 18 km long and gets water from the Cetina River. This lake was created after a dam and power plant were constructed. When the water is shallow, you can still see the ruins of some villages sacrificed to build the dam.
